I'm just not that fit yet, and it shows. On the bright side, my fitness usually changes quickly. Its most noticable in the threshold workouts. I'll be suffering along at 4:55-4:58 pace in workouts for weeks and then it will suddenly drop to 4:47-4:50 pace. When the mileage comes down close to the marathon, that pace will fall to the low 4:40s. It never happens gradually, just one day I check my split at the mile and I know the jump has been made. Weird but predictable.
